The 97's have all the fixes that the 94-96's worked the bugs out of, and are near the bottom of the depriciation scale - they're more reliable than the early and later 93's for the most part because of the lower pressure turbo, and most parts are getting pretty cheap and really are that easy to put on -
the AC compressor is the most expensive I've seen but only when new - hard to get rebuilt but some used are out there, but I'm with you - mine works good on the highway but not city, but I don't like the increased lag and drive with the windows down in the city anyway! -
The hardest thing I did was replace the clutch, but it saved me a lot - they last 85-100k so it's likely already done -
other than that just replace wear items (belts, hoses, etc) to prevent any headaches -
I live away from a dealer and order my parts so I plan ahead and inspect monthly!
For the current cost they are a very safe ride and good value!
