Funny how everytime Saab kills off a hatchback US sales set a record. Happened in '99 with the 9-5, happened again in 2003 with the 9-3SS. Saab didn't exactly kill off the hatchbacks, just improved them and evolved them into the prefected hatchback, the SportWagon and soon the SportCombi. It always amazes me the Saab purists and the supposedly more intelligent Saab customers who embrace a hatchback, but won't consider a SportWagon or SportCombi. Hatchback lovers love the practicallity the most, but you show them an even more practical SportWagon and they object to the style and the stigma, not an intelligent or rational decision you'd expect from a Saab customer. Just shows you that emotion plays a big part in the purchasing process and Saab has proved twice now that US Saab buyers are more emotional about sedans as most families have an SUVs and trucks to haul stuff in.

Your grudging respect that the 9-5s still have some Saab-ness is a slap in the face to the folks who designed and built them in Sweden. A 9-5 has little or no GM DNA in it, Saab designed, Saab engineered, Trollhattan built. Yea GM signs the checks. Has Mercedes ruined Chrysler? Has Ford ruined Volvo or Jag? Take your Ralph Nader hat off and quit bashing Saab with the GM club. Would you have been happier having Saab expire instead of GM proping them up? A 9-5 is the greatest Saab of all, completely modern and up to date, with complete respect and reverence for Saab design and engineering and the unmistakable Trollhattan quality of workmanship. And a 9-5 is built in a plant, who with the investment from GM, has upgraded quality to a high water mark for Saab exceeding almost all of our European competition and many Japanese brands.

"Saab-ness" has often had little to do with Saab. DKW engines, Ford engines, the Ricardo engine which the forerunner of the modern 2.3T, Opel chassis, Lancia/Alfa chassis, Epsilon chassis.

In my Saturn days it was said that Saturn would be folded into GM, GM would take over Saturn. A lot of the opposite happened, Saturn folks and Saturn practices influenced GM profoundly. I see a lot of that going on with Saab.
