Replacing V6 Rod Bearings in Car?

I have a 1994 900SE (2.5 V6) with 178,000 miles. The car still runs/drives well, but . . . I have recently begun to notice rod bearing noise on startup. It will exhibit a light knock for about 5 minutes on cold startup and then go away, to return the next time I cold start the engine. I have been letting it idle until the knock subsides before driving it.
The engine has excellent compression, doesn't smoke, has excellent power and is in good condition for it's mileage, so I'd like to replace the rod bearings and see if I can get another 50k out of it before tearing into the engine. Question is, can rod bearing replacement be done by removing the oil pan? At present, I don't have the time/budget to remove the engine (as I would give it a full rebuild, regasket and new clutch if I have it out, which would cost ~$2,000 and take weeks). Any suggestions would be appreciated.
