Anders, Thanks for the response.
I just finished a timing belt replacement on the vehicle including replacement of the tensioner assembley, idler pulleys and front seals. From listening to the noise, with a long aluminum rod, I can't track down a source for it, but it has a low, heavy, knocking tone to it that has typically indicated bottom end. The fact that it goes away when warm would indicate to me that it's a clearance issue and thermal expansion is closing the gap. That being said, I would have initially expected piston slap but the compression numbers pointed me to rod bearings.
I guess I could do one of three things; attach a reliable oil-pressure gauge and monitor oil pressure when warm, drop the oil pan and inspect the original bearings or leave things well-enough alone. What do you think?
