Thank you for clearing this up. Last winter, I notice the coffee brown color on my dipstick. It appeared after the local Saab dealer had done the "PCV" (the one that is now to be reversed if there is excess oil consumption). I had never seen this in any other car before except in situations where the head gasket had failed thus allowing coolant into the oil. I took pictures, kept notes of what frigid or not so frigid temperatures associated with trip lengths of a few miles to 150 miles. The dealer service manager thought I was nuts, and I was afraid that I might be purchasing an engine repair that cost about the same as what a high mileage 2001 9-3 might be worth. Very low temperatures seemed to produce the mix more reliably than the lenght of the trip. I.e., driving 150 miles in 15 degrees F produced the mix in the tube as opposed to shorter drives above freezing. Before the PCV fix, I had never seen anything but oil on the dip stick.
