I have been saying it all alone not to blindly look at the SID for fuel consumption but to fill the tank full and reset the trip odometer over several tanks to get the real value.
I guess as newer the car is, the SID is more and more accurate and can show that something is going on when seeing a drop over several gas tanks and resetting the SID.
But using a full tank and resetting the trip odometer over several tanks is still the best and most accurate way.
Another thing that makes it difficult is when a customer call and say, I used to get this and that many miles out of a tank of gas but now I only get this many miles.
Since each model and year have different volume of the gas tanks, I have to find the specs and convert their figures into miles per gallon to make any sense.
If they instead do the calculation themself and tell me, I used to get that many miles per gallon and now I get this, I can better relate to it.
As you discovered, a broken vacuum hose can play dirty tricks on the gas mileage. So can an Oxygen sensor that start to near the end of its lifespan even though it is not bad enough to trigger the C/E light or fail the emission test.
Oxygen sensors start to deteriorate from day one of driving but they get even more and more sensitive to disturbances when reaching higher miles like over 100 to 150K.
