I was wondering about that, good to hear that there was no polymerized oil. One of the polymerization processes is thought to be accelerated by wear metals. There is something that one can buy to accelerate the drying (polymerization) of oil based paints; called "Japan Dryer" that is a solvent with metallic compounds in it. When used it acts as a catalyst for the polymerization of the vegetable oils, such as boiled linseed oil and tung oil. So neglected oil changes and wear metal build up contribute to the oxidization and polymerization process. Some oils are prone to this. If you use almost any vege oil on a roasting pan or such in a hot oven, it will turn to varnish. If you use beef dripping, chicken fat, lard or butter, this by and large will not happen.
It might be that neglected synthetic oils have a worse outcome that some basic engine oils. Maybe the synthectic oils are really liquid plastic in want of a polymerization process and catalyst.
