Alternator problems?

I am hoping someone can help me shed some light on this. I have a 95 900s and today I started getting intermittent chimes with a very dim battery light on the dash. I was on my way to get my wheels swapped (the lugs wouldn't move) and the car wouldn't turn over once I got to the shop.
They checked the alternator with one of those handheld units and it went from 8 to 13 volts at idle... not quickly fluctuating, but we would walk away, come back... and check... and it would be different. So, they jumped the car, I went on my way... and for about 3 hours everything was fine. Now, the chimes are back. The alternator was replaced 2 years ago. I had an autozone test it again this afternoon, and it was fine...
When the car is moving at speed, there are no chimes... once I move below 40mph the chime comes back on :)
Help !
Any ideas where to start looking?? Initial simple fixes?
