I think a flaky neutral-safety switch would not throw a warning from the SID. Not sure (mines isn't auto) but maybe someone can try starting in R or something to see whether it throws a warning.
Check the small trigger wire on the starter. But it seems like that wouldn't be related to temperature.
Wiggling the key while its running isn't necessarily a good check. That would check for the circuit that powers the ignition & fuel systems. But it doesn't really test the starter circuit.
