Hey Brad!
i just changed the oil on my '02 Viggen a few weeks ago. I'm a Viggen virgin, so this was my first time and it was easier than I thought. The car being so low, I jacked up the right front, removed the wheel and put a jack stand under there. The oil drain plug and filter are then quite accessible. To assist the draining process, I lowered the car once the plug was removed.
I went through the same questions RE oil and after much research decided not to use Mobil 1 due to the many questionable posts here and on Volkwagen forums. I decided to go with Amsoil 5w-40 synthetic and a Saab filter. I may start to use Amsoil or Mobil filters in the future, as I've heard many good things about them and their ability to filter better.
Best of luck and enjoy the process of taking intimate care of a great car.
Robert
