The money you pay for the warranty will cover those one or two problems. To make the comparison fair, you have to consider that cash covers any problems whereas extended warranties have a lot of exclusions as to what the cover. Wear items (a broad category) are never covered and most warranties exlude things like clutches, shocks, many suspension parts, etc. Most exclude seals except in conjunction with a major repair of a covered part - so, for example, a leaking headgasket is not covered unless you have an internal part like a rod break (unlikely with a Saab). Likewise, they often don't cover things like sludge related problems, internal corrosion, any accessories, the list goes on and on.
If you can get a bumper-to-bumper extension like the original warranty, thats good. Most of them are not worth the money.
