Hi,
I have an annoying problem with a surging or uneven turbo on my 2001 9-3 that has been going on for several months despite several trips to the dealer.
The problem occurs when cruising at a steady speed & light throttle. I will feel the car lurch and see the turbo gauge move up & down (within the white section). It's almost as if the throttle is released / reapplied very quickly. Sometimes it's severe enough that I can see the gear shift (standard transmission) move, again as if the power were cut out & abruptly reapplied. It happens only under light throttle, when car is warm or cold, with and without cruise control engaged. No check engine lights, no change in fuel economy. Acceleration is still smooth with turbo hittng the start of the red section.
It's intermittent though: sometimes it won't happens for a few days, other times it will occur for a few seconds during my drive to work, on a recent road trip of mainly highway driving it did it continously for 1hr, but the rest of my >1000km trip were fine.
The only other symptom is that on start up, the idle will be high at 1500rpm and the car will sometimes stumble when pulling away, almost as if I were too abrupt with the clutch.
The dealer first replaced the turbo bypass valve which seemed to improve it for a week or so. This was soon after it started to happen though, so maybe it was just a coincidence. The turbo was then replaced (under warranty) when I started to get smoke on start-up. I hoped this would fix this problem but it made no difference. On the last 2 visits to the dealer, they have been unable to reproduce the problem. My warranty has now expired.
I will be making another appointment at the dealer soon, so if anyone has some ideas for what I can ask the dealer to look for, I would greatly appreciate it.
