What did you pay initially last December for this repair? Nobody likes to pay twice to get something repaired, that's why you took it to a professioanl mechanic in the first place. One could argue that he should be making this right for you simply to earn your future business and trust. It should not be your responsibilty to split it, just to prevent any awkward moments down the road. If you are a good customer, he should be working hard to keep it that way.
Although I have been known to buy pizza and beer for the shop I use, I don't think I would pay twice for their error.
*I do commend the guy for admitting their mistake, I think that says volumes about his ethics. For that alone I would tell him I appreciate his honesty, but feel awkward about the current dilema and want to work something out that is fair for both of you.
Goodluck, I am sure you both will work it out.
