Most important thing is to pinpoint the location of the sound.
Scrap piece of garden hose can help you find the sound. Or maybe a screwdriver held to your ear. Just don't get caught up in the spinning belt & pulleys.
Certainly would be a waste to pull the head & timing chain only to find out that it's the normal ticking sound of the EVAP purge valve... OTOH, it's pretty easy to remove the valve cover & have a look around.
It might be normal for idler pulleys to make growling noise, but I bet other noises are POSSIBLE.
