Thanks for the input guys.
I will definitely do a lot of "sound testing" to try and pinpoint the ticking rattle, before I start pulling things apart. I am not convinced that it is the timing chain, however, I am convinced that it is not a normal sound. It is certainly a metal hitting metal, that smooths with revving, making me think timing chain that quiets as the slack is decreased from pressure. I am also thinking maybe a cam lifter/follower that smooths with increased hydraulic pressure from revving up. It is not a knocking sound like a crank/rod though.
I may be wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that the timing chain/tensioners should be replaced as a matter of maintainance at a certain mileage in any case on these engines.
Does anyone know if there is a maintainance schedule for changing the timing chain?
