This is the first 9-3 I hear about having balance shaft chain/sprocket issues so I wonder if that really is the real problem?
You refered to posts from me about oil pressure valve and such but I haven't seen that exact problem on the 9-3 and 9-5.
I have only seen sprocket issues on the NG900 engine.
The 9-3/9-5 engines seems to have other issues wearing out the timing chain prematurely and that could be due to oil starvation or sludge.
I guess sludge is ruled out in your case.
I would investigate this a lot more before ordering parts since you might end up having to replace the engine anyway after all initial work.
Did you get the timing cover off?
Did you remove all main and rod bearings to check for wear?
Did you find the article from Chuck Andrews about the issues he had that turned out the be bad balance shaft bearings too?
I can't say what's wrong with your engine but it might be much deeper than you think.
