You might want to consider going with a Classic 900 ('94 or older)for a couple of reasons. 5K will put you in a much nicer one than with the NG900's. They are much, much simpler cars and cheaper/easier to repair. Although they may be a little more "fiddley" it's usually relatively simple/cheap things you can fix yourself. Finally the NG900s are still depreciating where the classsic 900's bottomed out a year or two ago and prices are slowly starting to go up. I own both and while the NG is the most reliable Saab I've ever owned, is quiter, more comfotable, faster, and a better all around car, my '93 convertible is more fun to drive and much cooler looking(people come up and compliment the car all of the time). If you can find a nice NG in your budget that's had the top mechanism sorted out, got for it. But if you want a unique driving experience, in a car you don't see everyday, with the possiblility it could go up in value, try out a classic.
