How long does a (cam) timing chain usually last?

Wifes' 1995 900s - 220k w/EXC. maintaince (yours truly). Not neglected in any way, 50/50 blend of Mobil 1/Mobil high mileage every 4 to 5000 mi. Bla Bla Bla...anyway, I'm worried there's a problem w/the cam chain/tensioners/sliders. There is a noise emminating from the valve cover right where the chain is...it's not the balance shaft chain - I removed it 43k ago at 177k (BTW, the oil pan/all eng. internals were immaculate). I haven't ruled out the serp. belt idler pulleys (will check that tomorrow) I've replaced the all those pulleys three times (pretty much every 50k) - most recently only 10k mi ago...but not the tensoiner pulley - did that at 150k, so now it's got 70k on it...boy I hope that's the problem!
So if the noise is emminating from the cam chain &/or tensioners...what's the least amount of surgury I have to get into? Can you RR the chain & some of the tensioners/sliders without removing the timing cover? I'm 'OK' w/yanking the head (gasket seeps some anyway), but the last time I removed the timing cover (to address the balance shaft chain) I was a complete ahole for at least a week! Thanks for any/all help.
