Hello I'm working on doing the timing chain and other work on my 94 saab 900s now, unfortunitally mine needs a lot of work but for yours saying it's just the timimg chain, you can do it without taking the timing cover off.
First check the tensioner by the tensoner pully and messure if it's greater then 11mm your chain should be done. position the engine at tdc using the crank bolt. remove the valve cover, check the the cam shaft marks to make sure that it is alligned up there at tdc as well. if your timing chain has a master link remove the link and attach the new chain to the old one, if your chain is endless you will have to cut a link out to attach the new one. Once the new chain is attached to the old one have an assistant crank the engine around using the crank bolt while you feed the chain around. once you have the chain new chain fed through you should be able to detach the old chain from the master link and link the new chain togeater with its other end in between the camshaft gears. Then rotate the engine through one or two more cycles to ensure that it still lines up proper. Put in a new tesioner and you should be ready to go....
As far as checking the guides, you can only kind of see thier condition by peering at the side ones through the opening in the under the valve cover, the upper one you can replace with the valve cover off. I don't think that you can replace the side ones by removing the head( I havn't removed the head on mine yet but I think the bolts are down to low to get to without removing the timing cover)
Hope this is helpfull.... getting the timing cover off == no fun :(
And a quick question, is yours the 2.0 or 2.3 engine and how is the vibration of the engine with the balance chain removed as I am thinking of doing this with mine to save some work, but mine is the 2.3 engine and I have heard that that one needs the balance chain or it vibrates too hard
