Ironically i have a similar story and the details may help. I have two Saabs and the one in question is a 1997 900SE turbo. My son was on his way to the NJ shore and overheated. Turns out he blew a head gasket. A local shop ripped down, machined the head, replaced and repaired the head gasket, replaced the coil cassette, hoses, clips, labor, etc. The bill was $3300.00. I pick up the car and it stalls. they tell me it may be 500 + miles before it runs well. after two weeks of rough running i took the beast to a local Saab dealer and they could not find the cause. they did determine that the compression on all cylinders was low. If the rings were bad I would be burning oil. If the seals were bad or the valves were bent I would have been pinging. I personally thought it was the timing but the dealer told me the timing was dead on. Then I discovered the balance chain. All along the shop that fixed the head was saying the same thing but the dealer did not know. I finally asked the dealer if the symptoms for the balance are low compression and they said yes. To keep a long story from getting longer. I will not ask the dealer or the other shop to replace the balance chain. I will either attempt it myself or junk the car.
