Hello Rich,
I'll have the valve cover removed and the chains and tensioners inspected this weekend but I have had none of the problems you've described- no overheating, loss of compression, etc- in fact, the car's running just fine. I just wanted to know if this preventative maintenance is necessary now or it can wait a little bit.
It was a slight financial hit to buy this car and it already needed some work done to it to get it in prime condition- 4 rotors, oil pressure switch, rear shocks and control arm bushings [though the mechanic said that's not urgent]. So if this timing chain/balance shaft chain issue [if it is an issue] can wait, it will wait.
Question: If the shop said the balance chain was going bad why didn't they replace it when they did all that other work?
