Two months ago I bought a 2002 9-3 with 100K miles from a Saab dealer for 8K. The car looked and ran great. Now, when getting some repairs done at an Indy Saab shop a laundry list of things it needed was laid on me: four new rotors [$900] oil pressure switch [$225], new rear shocks [$475], control arm bushings [could wait a little while] [$500] and, eventually, the timing chain and balance shaft chain changed out [could wait a little while] [$2300].

So I set about making this list happy doing a little at a time and the costs ran up- but it was what I expected. A mere three weeks into ownership I got a check engine light and I had my evaporative purge valve replaced [$270]. Additionally, I've just taken this car on two road trips and there have been two repairs needed after getting back- cabin fan resistor replaced [$260] and, most recently, the ACC compressor going bad was somehow messing up my alternator- draining the battery [with the battery light on], giving me a check engine light and disabling power steering. With the car at the shop my latest estimate to get this fixed in $1400. Now, combined with the other stuff I already did I've put 4K into this car after two months of owning it.

The maintenance stuff outlined for me by my Indy mechanic was ok- but these three surprise issues really chap my ass. I understand I bought a car with a lot of miles and they're not inexpensive to fix- but I certainly didn't expect THIS. Sidenote: Should I just never take this on a road trip again?
I thought a 2002 Saab would be a cinch to do 150K or 200K, easily.

Are all these repairs just something I'm going to have to put up with in the short term because I am getting a high-mileage car up to spec or will these issues be constant and ongoing throughout the life of the car- with the money I "saved" by getting a used car well beneath the KBB value being all for naught?

Obviously I don't expect anyone on here to have a crystal ball and tell me my future but any opinions/advice would be welcomed from those who have high mileage Saabs. Thanks.
