timing chain saga

I managed to change my timing chain with the engine in using tips from this site. It worked. Man, what a horror show when I finally pulled off the timing cover. The balance shaft guides had deep grooves. The upper guide was completely broken in two and the tensioner was shot. It actually had busted open. The back end had popped and the spring was pushing up against the timing chain guide. It was applying tension to the timing chain and not the balance chain! No wonder my timing chain was extended to 15mm and my engine sounded like a washing machine with a load of gravel.
Only problem is 1) oil pan is leaking and 2) I had to mutilate and remove the portion of the head gasket that sits over the timing cover. All becuase I didn't drop the oil pan which there really is no mention of in the various posts I saw. So it definitely ended being a bit of a hack job but I was pressed for time and the engine sounds absolutly beautiful now. See how long that lasts.
So for anyone attempting this op in the future...drop the oil pan.
