Oh, I hear you. A couple of years ago I got my son a '94 900S as his college car. It had only 70K miles on it. I knew the reputation of these early NG900 cars and I knew I'd be in for some repairs, but...
Ball joints, brakes, exhaust, welded rear shock tower, new clutch, new OXS, new tires, alignment, serp belt, water pump...I'm sure I've forgotten some of it. It was close to $4,000 on a $3,500 car. There were times I wanted to bail out, but once you're that far into it you have to keep going.
So, shame on me. I learned a lesson. But here's the good news. The car is fully sorted out now, all the consummables have been replaced, it runs well and hasn't given any trouble in more than a year and about 20K miles. Doesn't burn any oil, no rust, holds all his stuff for back and forth to college, is reasonably safe and gets good mileage.
The non-turboed 2.3 is a great engine. If you can get his car put right for $1200 you should do it. Even if it lasts just one more year, that's $100/month. And it will certainly run much longer than that.
