Easiest way to look for sludge, buying a used 9-3.....

Looking and a few cars. All 9-3 SE's. One 99, two 2000's.
What is the easiet way to look for sludge without pulling the pan, etc?
The 99 looks promising, only has 62K on it. Wondering if this car may be more prone to the sludge problem.
Also, what to look for to see if the PCV #6 has been done.
