If you could jack front of car up and place on jackstands, you would be able to run in gear and maybe tell where noise is coming from. Badly warped/rusted front brake rotors might be causing flutter and scraping but maybe not screeching noises. On a 1998 900 2.3L with hydraulic clutch that had a bad clutch disc, wheels turned OK in the air, but made horrible noises and no movement while wheels were on the ground. Caused by a broken friction disc which was not obvious (to me). You may want to check my earlier Saabnet post/picture below.
