Can The Clutch Arm Be Tightened Directly?

Just bought a 1997 SAAB 900-SET. Was told it might need a new clutch soon because 1) the clutch cable had been replaced and 2) the clutch still didn't release until the pedal had almost bottomed out.
After buying the car, noticed there was slack in the cable when the
engine was off. Just happened to notice the clutch control arm was
"sloppy" with almost an inch of lateral travel or movement back and forth.
One SAABNET post mentioned there was a bolt that was somewhere near the
bottom of the clutch control arm that could be tightened.
I'm not sure whether that bolt is exposed -- outside the clutch housing --
or not exposed -- outside the clutch housing.
I "fixed" the problem short range by inserting a spacer betweeen the
plastic "button" at the end of the clutch cable and the slot in the
control arm.
This works great, but I am concerned I am going to have a problem down the line as the control arm's bolt loosens and, perhaps, falls out
while I am driving.
Thanks in advance for the coaching tips.
Frank
