Your mechanic is a lying thief! If your axle had some loose inside the transmission, meaning it was separated from itself, you shouldn't be able to drive the car unless a very precise set of circumstances were in place, the likelihood of which, is very slim and would probably be quickly overcome by the immense torque of first gear. The portion of the drive-axle that installs into the transmission is extremely hardened and VERY difficult to break; I can't imagine how it could break under normal service conditions.

Even if you did need a transmission, you can purchase that transmission from most salvage yards, which is most likely what he would do, for under $500, unless you have one of the few turbocharged "S" models; the turbo transmissions are a little harder to find and can run in the $600-$900 range. If your mechanic thinks it's 9-10 hours labor for that transmission, he should go back to working on 60's and 70's models. I can do that job without a lift or air tools, which drastically reduce the labor, in 6-7 hours. A shop that's worth their name should be able to replace your transmission for $1500 or less. Your best bet, assuming you do in fact need a transmission and you aren't willing/able to do the work yourself, is to source a replacement transmission yourself and pay a transmission shop to to the R&R. This route should cost under $1000.
