I suppose I may have over reacted a little. Unfortunately that stems from having been in the business, even having owned my own shop, and seeing more than a couple guys at other shops I trusted leading customers down similar roads. Usually the story starts with "you need a really expensive repair, and the car isn't worth it," and later ends with "I'll give you $100 for it."
Realistically, it's much more likely that you didn't understand the explanation, than it is you have a drive axle broken off inside the transmission. In fact, if both drive axles aren't intact between the transmission and wheels, the car can't be moved under it's own power.
If you've made up your mind to get rid of the car, that's fine, I can't blame you. However, if your mind isn't made up you do have options. It does sound like whatever might be wrong with your transmission is repairable, and a real transmission shop may be able to do the repair for a reasonable cost. I personally replaced my transmission recently because of a broken shift fork, I have a '97 900SE turbo. I found my transmission at a place in Arkansas, called Redline; I purchased it and had it shipped to me for $325. The cheap ones are hard to find, but they are out there. I'm sure the teenager driving the car may have had something to do with it. However, my car is modified to stage 3, so it puts out about 250 horsepower, and I use it; my transmission and drive-axles hold up just fine.
If you want appliance-like, you may want to find a nice Honda Accord; those things don't seem to need any actual repairs until they get over 175,000 miles.
