Clutch Cable Questions (NG900)

My clutch gave a snap tonight and suddenly I had a lot less leverage on it, barely enough to change gears. I pulled at the snorkle near the firewall (as sometimes advised here) as best I could without any tools at hand and is seemed to help a bit although it's not back to full normal action at the pedal. I am thinking of pulling the main fusebox out of the way and pulling a bit more in the morning.
Question: Where does the cable traditionally break, and is there any way to check for strand breakage before it does? I think I will replace it anyway as it has a few miles on it, but I am wondering if it's safe to drive for a few days while I order one in.
Also, any tips on the replacement procedure would be welcome. I have the Haynes manual, but I know it doesn't always cover the real issues.
