You can buy just the heater hoses from eeuorparts.com for $30. I've never replaced them, someone here will have to comment on difficulty. Usually with heater hoses getting to them is the issue.
There should not be anything brown in the coolant. However, before you panic, check the oil. If there is manilla foam on the dipstick or in the top of the cap, you have a headgasket problem. If it's just in the cooling system, it might be some funky sealer.
I would check the oil (then assuming it's OK), flush the cooling system, replace the hoses, and refill the anti-freeze. If your radiator hoses are old, or if your thermostat has never been replaced, it would be a good time to do it. All are inexpensive and relatively easy to do.
