Depends how much you love the car, what kind of shape it's in, body, miles, etc. If you scrapped it, what would you replace it with? Is the turbo OK? There are also a lot of other things to consider.
Did you get an estimate to rebuild your engine? If it's rebuildable, you should be able to get it done for $2800 and be much better off than used.
I replaced the engine in my 01 Viggen - mint condition- 165K miles. I paid $1300 for a B235R engine with 80K. Cheap price, but it was stripped of almost everything. So I had to swap everything from my blown engine. My friend and I did the labor for free. The engine is OK- but it's far from perfect and not as good as what I had before I foolishly toasted it. You have to be careful with used engines.
But while everything was out, I replaced the entire clutch assembly, had the fly wheel turned, replaced rear main seal, crank shaft seal, practically every gasket, O-ring, pulleys, belt, all coolant hoses, , vac lines, hoses, T-stat, vac lines, PVC 6 update, new brake pads, turned the rotors, And this cost me another $1200.
And you should also consider some of the items above as well- while everything is apart.
So I have $2500 into it with no labor charges. You are looking at $3800 without replacing any of the items I listed, many of which you should consider.
