I kinda wondered. In this case I would suggest finding an independent exhaust shop that would cut out the old section and weld in a new one. Don't bother with a chain store, they'd rather sell you new. You can buy the flex pipe in various lengths.

Or depending upon your plans for the car you could wrap it with exhaust tape.

You also might try http://www.exhaustwarehouse.com/ for a replacement. I have seen replacements for under $200 including the cat. You would also then be able to sell your old cat to a junkyard for some dough too.
