I do not have the same understanding as you, I thought the first reaction of the system is to retard boost by 1/2 psi every time the system detects knock; but I could be wrong. While I don't think 13-14 psi is too much, I don't agree that you can't suffer detonation unless there's something else wrong with the engine, this assumption rules out an overheated intercooler, extreme road surface temperatures, a dirty fuel injector that could develop at any time, and any number of other factors including the possibility you'll develop something else wrong with your engine. I'm not suggesting you don't follow your plan, I just want to give you a bit of an alternative perspective. Why not just upgrade the ECU?
