Suspect clutch disc Posted by walt [Email] (#2707) [Profile/Gallery] (more from walt) on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 05:47:10 In Reply to: Re: Transmission or clutch problem?, SWEDECAR [Profile/Gallery] , Sun, 15 Aug 2010 20:30:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Friction lining on disc may have cracked and come loose, and a piece of it is catching and causing too much thickness to release clutch when pedal is depressed, which would explain inability to engage any gear with engine running. This may be detectable through clutch inspection opening by uneven diaphragm finger height on pressure plate. Also have seen springs fail on discs causing splined hub separation from friction lining plate. This will allow car to be "driven" in any gear while front is raised on jack stands, but no motion and unusual clutch noises when car is back on ground. While doing clutch, you may want to drain gear oil through a window screen and check magnet on drain plug. If any large fragments on screen or magnet, consider rebuilding/replacing tranny. On any used tranny, check drivers side left differential bushing for looseness.
