If you can select all the gears normally with the engine off then you definitely have a bad clutch. The fact that's it's a 1999 model, 11 years old makes a clutch diagnosis a slam dunk. Dunno' why it popped out of gear. If the clutch was dragging and therefore difficult to put into gear than that may have caused it not going into gear entirely and hence popping out. Not saying you don't have a bad tranny but the likely hood of that is very low whereas a bad clutch is a certainty.
