I just replaced speakers in both of mine.

I can't say for certain on your 9-3 but the following is from my experience with my NG 900.

The door panel is held on by 5 bolts (two at bottom of door, two behind door pull handle, one behind door opener lever) plus numerous plastic "plug-ins." There is one on the outside of the door that you remove by pushing in the center pin an 1/8" or so. If you look at the screwdriver handle in the trunk you'll see it has a little knob on the handle for just this type of use. The rest of the panel pops off.

Because I had a bunch of speakers from two convertibles I parted out I used two-way speakers. They work and sound fine. But, you will only get base because that is all that ever goes to the speaker from the stock amp. Which from what it sounds like is all you want.

All that really happens is that the stock head sends a low end signal to the amp which amplifies it and sends it to the door speakers, the speaker would normally split the signal to either the tweeter or woofer.

If I remember correctly the stock door speakers have a pretty low watt rating. So if you get decent speakers you might as well switch both out. Also, you may want to add some insulation to absorb both speaker and car/door vibration. plastic cones will last longer than paper.
