Ignition Switch Problem & Subsequent electrical problem Posted by juanm [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I posted a message regarding my "noise" recently. Now I am seeking related advice regarding what occurred after it was determined that it was the ignition switch and it was replaced.
Wondering if you have any one thoughts on this.
1999 Saab 9-3 S Turbo Convertible.
My car had been making a clacking noise once in a whlle that would last a few moments (say 10 seconds at most). It seemed to be coming from the front left (driver's side) of the car - perhaps under the hood). It only occur when the car was being driven.
I figured it could be a belt or perhaps my brakes.
Last Tuesday, after driving home and then going about a mile, my car made the noise which then got very loud - VERY loud - and it continued. I pulled over the side of the road and turned the car off. I then started it and the noise was still there while I was stopped. It was coming from under the hood which I couldn't open by myself. so I walked the half mile home and called AAA and my wife drove me back to the car. I tried starting it again and it made the same noise. My wife hear the loud noise too. It was about to rain so I tried to put up my windows with the key in the start position. The windows didn't work. I don't think the radio worked at that point either.
The AAA guy showed up minutes later (a new record in calling them - less than 15 minute response). He asked me to start the car and then said he would do it. He did and the car ran fine. No noise. he drove it up and down the street. He then told me to drive it home and he would follow me. NO noise.
So I then waited until the next day and had it towed to my dependable knowledgeable Saab only mechanic.
One person on Saabnet stated that it was my starter switch. That the starter switch when it when to the start position did not turn back away from the position (spring loaded or something) and in the start position it kept the started turning and the starter was making the racket. Sounded good to me. Moments later I called my mechanic and asked them what they found. They told me my belts were tight and fine but the noticed the starter switch was stuck in the on position and not sprining back from it at times. They said that was the problem and I told him to replace it.
The next day when I picked it up they noted that there were many codes (SRS, B1610, B2871, B2876, B2441, B2446, STC + TWICE) that were displayed and that the airbag warning light was also on (no airbag protection). Check engine light on and no communication with the Tech 2. The owner also said that the computer (I think he said this) was not responding completely. He opined that when the starter was running (due to the switch's failure) it put 20 volts of current into the system which could have damaged some equipment , sensors and/or wiring. He wasn't certain. It would require further checking by them.
So I then got in the car to drive home and tried to put the top down. It wouldn't go down. The windows did work. The radio did work but the top wouldn't go down. Nothing happened when I pressed the switch next to the ignition switch / keyhole. in the console. I asked them if they perhaps didn't connect some wires. I left the car for them to shut my top and check it further. They shut the top later in the day but didn't have the time to check my car further.
The airbag light continues to stay on and I also have the exclamation point in the triangle in the center of my instrument panel is on (central alert warning or something). The car runs but I am not certain if it is my imagination or not but it seems a little bit rough in running (if the computer isn't working that's not surprising)
I tired my Sears OBD2 meter on it (a basic one) and it gives me an error message. I am installing the software to read the meter further so perhaps I will get some more information on this.
any ideas of what happened here?
Is it possible for the electrical system, sensors, motors, etc. to be damaged by the starter continually run from a possible power surge of 20 volts or whatever?
Thanks
