The head was done as a result of a compression test followed by a leak down test, which showed low compression in #4. #'s were 210,210,210 and 130, and there was a 25% loss on #4, so independent of the smoking problem, we had a gasket/head issue.
Pistons all looked fine, and in my experience a bad piston or rings in one cylinder would result in a flutter that is noticeable and this thing runs smooth. Idle vac readings nice and steady, even with the smoke/oil spitting.
The shop that did the machine work did note that there was a small crack starting at the water jacket, which they filled and machined. There was a small amount of oil, maybe a teaspoon or so in the intercooler, but we took it out and cleaned it out. When the external oil leak was done, we also did the crankcase vent hose update as one of the original hoses was cracked from age.
The original turbo had enough play in it that a reasonable person might come to the conclusion that the original was shot. The 1st replacement came from the salvage yard, who knows how long it had been sitting.
I'm NOT just throwing parts on it, but trying to work a logical flow What I'm really looking for is what should I be checking/measuring so that I don't wind up chasing my tail.
