It would help to know the fault code.
Since shift solenoid problems are so rare (replaced one in a 95 900) and that it is just about impossible to find it acting up, I would be very hesitant to go ahead and do that repair even if a customer agree and I would not promise anything unless I had seen the solenoid act up during testing which could take a long time of driving and measuring the resistance of solenoid when it is stinking hot.
I would much rather reset the code and let the customer drive again and see if the same code comes back a second time. But that's just me.
