Well, I was fairly upset that they approached the problem by starting with taking the cover off. From everything I read it seemed like that would be a latter resort. It cost me 160 and they ended just telling me to take it elsewhere.
So after much hunting I found a new place here in Fresno that worked on Saabs. But now the bad news. They found a wire that was being pushed by a pin and fixed it. Took it for a test drive and the original problem still exists. They think the gear box is not right. They have recommended that they remanufacture the existing transmission for a total cost of $3600 (!!). Not being car saavy, I am now at a lost as to if this is a fair price, if this is necessary, and considering that the car is 15 years old if I should just look into buying a new used car. It pains me though because I do love my SAAB and have put in considerable money into it over the last few years.
