Could it sludge up that quickly? - what to look for?

I wasn't thinking that the oil viscosity would be the reason the light is on, as much as wondering what weight I should be using in the cold if I was going to change oil as first step in diagnosis.
In the past, I've been willing to play trial and error with most things (including a 1qt/100mile oil leak) due to my short commute and the fact that it's not the family hauler, just my commuter. I realize the potential severity of this one, and have borrowed the wife's car (with some schedule gymnastics) to get to work until resolved. Oil change didn't solve anything, but was due so I started there.
So if I'm looking for oil starvation or sludge, start with valve cover top end inspection? Or do I need to go straight to the oil pan you think? Does something like an AutoRX have any merit if I look and things are in decent appearance, to clean up journals or whatever isn't as visible?
Thanks!
