Ok, well I may have found a good clue today, and it frustrates me because I was kind of on to this before anything else.
I had originally realized that there was seemingly a tiny amount of play when (with the front end up in the air) grabbing the driver's side wheel at 9 and 3 and turning/shaking it. I inspected the tie rod end thinking it might have gone bad. It seemed fine without any play and that's when I brought it to the Saab dealer the first time and they couldn't find anything. At the time I didn't know about the issue of the worn tie rod bushings.
After work today I tried shaking the tie rod and it has play on the driver's side and does not on the passenger side. Good job to two shops, one being the Saab dealership and one being a well-respected tire/suspension shop that works on Porsches. Apparently neither could figure this out. I even explained the play on the driver's side to the Saab dealer.
I'm looking forward to receiving these new bushings and putting them in now. Even if this doesn't completely fix the problem, they will do something because the ones in there now are slightly worn looking and there's definitely play on the driver's side.
