For the past week, I've had a sort of a hash or rough whine coming from the passenger side of my engine. It got progressively worse, and almost sounded as if it was coming from the end of the head- like a camshaft bearing or something had gone out. Today, the noise seems to have subsided.
This afternoon, I put a stethescope on all the pullies, the water pump, alternator, head etc to see if I could locate anything unusual, and it appears that the remnants of the noise are coming from the idler pully that is positioned dead center on the end of the block. Couple of questions- does it make sense that the noise has subsided? Next- is this the likely culprit with classic symptoms? And lastly, this thing is buried between the block and the fenderwell--- how much of a pain is it to remove and replace? It looks like I could get a box-end wrench on the bolt or nut holding it-- but will I be able to easily reposition a new one and get it bolted on? Any tips are greatly appreciated.
