Bob: I had this problem last year on my 1998 NG900 SE which had 40K. In between gear changes, P to R or to D, the idle was erractic and on occasion soared to beyond 2K. Also, idle problem was especially noticeable at cold-start up. The check engine light eventually came on. It was annoying to say the least.
I did the basics first. Replace plugs. You might have wires, cap and rotor. Check those as well. I also checked all of the attending hoses near the throttle body area and tightened whatever appeared loose. Don't overtighen. I then cleaned the body with carbuerator cleaner.
I also used a fuel injection cleaner. Some guys on the board recommend Techron. Personally, I prefer and use Lubro Moly Ventil Sauber and Lubro Moly Fuel Injection cleaner.
Lastly and most important, I cleaned the IAC by removing it from its mount and spraying carbuerator cleaner into the valve. My valve was covered with carbon deposit. When you hose it down, work the valve back and forth with your fingertips so that you can remove all carbon traces. Once cleaned, you will notice that the valve swings back and forth with much less resistance.
Try this and I hope works. It did for me.
Please report back with results.
