Bob, I have a 96 900S 2.3, and after I reset my check engine light by pulling fuse 28 (I think), I had the erratic idle you describe. It fixed itself after a few days of driving, I assumed that the computer was relearning the correct idle speed. This has been the case on two occasions. For the few days that it was erratic it was not fun, the whole car shaking as it almost stalled, then would go to about 1200rpm and settle down to about 1000rpm idle.

The only reason I am posting my experience is that I know that it was caused by a resetting of the fuse, so its probably something electrical wrong with your engine (im not too well versed in engine technology). Maybe try pulling the fuse and waiting a few days to see if it fixes itself? Just a layman offering my non-scientific advice.
