'96 convertible top woes

I've got rather serious problems with the convertible top on my 1996 SET. The top was down over the weekend and when I attempted to raise the roof it closed about 90% of the way and then stopped. I can drop the roof and it will stow itself away again perfectly. However I can't get it to close all of the way. The final step or movement in the closing procedure allows the back part of the roof (the section below the rear window) to lower and seat itself onto the hard tonneau cover. That's where the process stalls - with a racheting sound as if gears aren't quite meshing. Yeah, I know it doesn't sound too good! I've got some tips (thanks Anton) from the bulletin board on how to take care of the motor that's probably causing the problems. However, I am stuck now just trying to get the roof to close.
My owners manual is for a '97 Saab (but the car is a '96) and it shows a red lever located behind the flip down rear seats. Apparently the red lever disengages the electrical and mechanical system allowing one to manually raise (but not lower) the roof. Unfortunately, the 1996 model does not have that red lever. (Or, if it has a similar lever I can't find it)
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
