Graeme: I agree with REM and Dean. Some sort of cleaner should be used. Personally, I prefer Lubro Moly. I used a lot of the Lubro Moly products in my Mercedes diesel and have had good results. Hard to get but I think well worth it.
I have a 98 900SE, same car as REM, and had the problem you explained. It occurred last winter at around 40K. Erratic idle, shaking, vibrating when shifting auto tranny. The check engine evetually came on. I did all the basics: plugs, Lubro Moly, ATF, checked battery, checked vaccum lines, cleaned throttle body, and Air filter. The last thing I did which I believe was the solution was a thorough cleaning of the idle control valve ["IAC"]. I cleaned it with carb/choke cleaner. I noticed thick deposits of carbon clinging to the valve. The problem was solved almost immediately. As a bonus, the check light went out.
Hope this helps.
