bad morning (long)

i went to the auto store this morning, and after i left, i was driving for no more than 10 seconds when the car stalled. when i tried starting it, it was rough. it sounded like one cylinder would fire occasionally, but nothing good. after 20 minutes of trying to figure out what the heck happened, i called AAA. while i was waiting, i was playing around pulling fuses, and i pulled the fuel injection system and cranked the engine. everything sounded smooth, so i put the fuse back in, and tried to start it, and it started right up. so i canceled the tow. on the way back, i was accelerating on the highway in 3rd gear and got to 75 and couldnt accelerate anymore. i let off the gas and the car stalled. i smelled burning clutch. i put the clutch in and it coasted, then i popped it back out, and instead of turning the engine, it slowed the car down dramatically. for some reason, it didnt grab and wouldnt turn the engine. i coasted off the road and waited a minute. tried to start the car again, and it started right up. i didnt try to go above 60 the rest of the way. when i pulled into my place, and let the car idle for a few minutes, i noticed an abnormal sound that i never heard before and it sounded as if it were coming from the timing side of the engine. i have no idea what happened from when i left the store this morning. everything was fine before then, except the faulty plugs i had a few days ago. i replaced those yesterday at the dealer and everything was fine since. any suggestions or theories appreciated!
