I wonder if the tensioner died and left your cams out of sync.
This is far more than an oil issue. The difference in perf. between running say 20W-50 and 5W-30 should be minimal, _might_ show up in mpg but that's all on the street.
Deans right, check your idler pulleys and the DI. Don't drive the car unless it's an emergency. Funny noises should be investigated.
